To ensure
the confidence and trust of donors, the Neighbor To Nation
Board of Directors has established high standards for membership.
Staff works with individual organizations to assist them in
qualifying. To qualify, an organization must:
• Be recognized as tax-exempt
under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code for at
least three years.
• Have provided services,
benefits or program assistance in 15 or more states or one
or more foreign countries during the previous three years.
• Certify that contributions
are effectively used for the announced purposes of the organization.
• Have an overhead ratio
of 25% or less, or have a reasonable explanation and a plan
to reduce it if above 25%.
• Account for funds
in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles
(GAAP).
• Be directed by an
active and responsible Board of Directors whose members have
no material conflict of interest and a majority of whom serve
without compensation.
• Certify that publicity
and promotional activities are based upon actual programs
and operations, are truthful and non-deceptive, and make no
exaggerated or misleading claims.
• Identify the governmental
entity under which the charitable organization is chartered,
incorporated or organized (congressionally chartered or the
state in which it is registered).
• Receive at least 20%
of total support and revenues from the general public.
• Prepare and make available
to the public, upon request, an annual report that includes
a full description of the organization’s activities
and supporting services and identifies its directors and chief
administrative personnel.
